Abstract
Purpose: To assess the indication and effect of screw fixation in the transverse patellar fractures.

Materials and methods: W e analysed the results of 14 transverse patellar fractures fixed with screws from January 1991 to M ay 2005. M ean follow -up period w as 47 m onths (range, 12¡143 m onths). W e analysed the radiologic union, operation tim e, RO M and postoperative Lysholm score.

Results:All fractures healed uneventfully. The m ean displacem ent w as decreased from 2.2 m m preoperatively to 0.3 m m postoperatively (p=0.001,W ilcoxon signed rank test).The m ean operation tim e was 34 m inutes (range,20 to 60 m inutes).Norm al range of m otion was achieved in 13 knees (92.9% ). Average Lysholm score w as 95.9 at final follow-up.

Conclusion: Screw fixation seem ed to be usefulfor treatm ent of transverse patellar fracture even in com m inuted fractures w ith large fragm ents. The advantage of this technique w as the preservation of extensor m echanism , sim plicity, short operation time and good cosm esis.
